Description

A History of the Pennsylvania National Guard at Mount Gretna

From 1885-1935, thousands of troops converged annually at Mount Gretna for military training and an opportunity to hone their marksmanship skills. It began with 125 acres donated by Robert Coleman in 1885, and continued to serve both the Pennsylvania National Guard and the U.S. Army until 1935.

The event drew visiting dignitaries viewing our troops in preparation for a war with Spain, a Mexican border war, World War I, and more. This, in turn, drew thousands of visitors hoping to catch a glimpse of our military in training or on parade. This booklet includes a list of encampments at Mt. Gretna, maps, and photos from this extraordinary time in Mt. Gretna History.
