Glimpses of the Past Volume 1: Farmers In the Woods booklet

$10.00

MGAHS is excited to announce we are launching a project called Glimpses of the Past – a series of booklets, written and researched by local writers. Our first booklet is called Farmers in the Woods, written by Lois Herr and Sue Bowman.
The authors take us back to 1890 when the Exposition Hall, now the Mt. Gretna Roller Rink and Mount Gretna’s oldest building, was built.
Farmers from around the area were invited to show their animals, equipment and other related items here until 1916 when the exhibits moved to Harrisburg to become the PA Farm Show.

Description

Mt. Gretna’s Little Known Agricultural Background

Imagine thousands of visitors, accompanied by their prized poultry and livestock, converging on Mt. Gretna for a ‘Farmers’ Encampment.” It was an annual August event, from 1890-1916, held in the building now used as the Mt. Gretna Roller Rink. It included exhibits, competitions, equipment demonstrations, and even political candidate rallies. After the last Encampment in 1916, the Pennsylvania Farm Show appeared in January 1917 (seen by many as a sequel of the Mt. Gretna Farmers’ Encampment). Farmers in the Woods includes photos, programs, and mementos of this weeklong agricultural event.
